THINGS TO DO
We bought this beautiful barn conversion in early 2021, when like many people, we were craving nature and open spaces after a long winter and covid lockdown. We’ve since enjoyed some great family times in the property and surrounds. Here is a list of our favourite outings. We’d love you to add your own to our visitors’ book so we can all share in the best this lovely area has to offer.
- Woolacombe Beach for everything! Swimming, surfing, jogging. The Puttsborough end is particularly pretty, we love it for a late afternoon swim
- The Mortehoe Point walk where you are almost guaranteed to see a seal colony -https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/devon/woolacombe/morte-point-walk-seals-and-smugglers
- Afternoon tea at the Grampus Inn, then strolling around the quaint seaside village of Lee it’s located in
- Stunning landscape with wild goats at the Valley of Rocks, Lynton, and a magnificent coastal work for those not suffering from vertigo (Best UK coastline walk according to walking addict Paul Bloomfield - https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/ive-walked-1-000-miles-of-uk-coastline-and-this-stretch-is-best-m9fc23r2s)
- One of our absolute favourites, hiring bikes from Braunton Waterside Bike Hire and riding the Tarka Trail along the estuary, over the bridge, and stopping at the popular cyclists’ café (Fremington quay) on route for a great selection of sandwiches
- Excellent food and atmosphere at the Pyne Arms in East Down (15mn drive) and delicious Wood Fired pizza from the food truck that comes once a week in West Down (check website to find out which day - https://exevalleypizza.co)
- Eating Sri Lankan street-food from the Hippy Happy Hopers bus in a paddock overlooking Croyde Beach or at the Barricane Beach café in Woolacombe (summer months only)
- Kids rolling down the huge sand dune at Braunton Burrows
- Riding the water driven cable car that links Lynton to Lynmouth
- An easy short circular walk in Parracombe, starting from St Petrock’s church, via the new village café and Parracombe church
- Family games of football on the West Down village green, and kids enjoying the playground there (to get there cross the road outside the Barton Farm driveway and follow the pedestrian path past July Cottage and into the field ahead)
- Dinner or drinks at the Crown Inn, our local village pub, and then an easy stroll home
- An hour circular countryside walk in the rolling hills of West Down via Little Confort Farm with a long ascent towards the end (West Down map enclosed in the welcome book – if map is missing you can buy one from the shop)
- Kids walking to the West Down village co-op in the morning to buy croissants and chocolate milk, their holiday treat
- Driving from Croyde to Braunton and stopping at a look out to marvel at Saunton Sands beach and Braunton Burrows
- Devonshire tea and pasties at the National Trust’s Sandleigh Tea Room & Gardens, Croyde, then walking Baggy Point headland
- Looking at our ‘pet’ frogs in our little wildlife pond and seeing a hedgehog in the garden during the spring/summer season. Usually out at night and can be seen with a torch. The small pond is shallow and raised, but PLEASE SUPERVISE SMALL CHILDREN in the garden if you have concerns.
- The Lynmouth to Watersmeet circular walk with the Watersmeet tea room for another Devonshire tea
- Heddon Valley to Woody Bay walk - https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/devon/heddon-valley/heddon-valley-to-woody-bay-walk
- Lee Bay costal and woodland walk - https://www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk/walksdb/25/
- Delicious Thai food at the Siam Bistro in Braunton. Can’t wait to go back
We hope this list gives you plenty of inspiration to get out and about. And when you’re not out, you can enjoy beautiful Barton Farm and its oasis garden.
Happy Holidays!
